Get Pro Results Every Time

Painting is one of the most accessible DIY projects, but the difference between amateur and professional results comes down to technique.

Prep Is Everything

The secret to a great paint job is preparation. Spend 80% of your time prepping and 20% painting.

  • Clean walls with sugar soap
  • Fill any holes or cracks
  • Sand smooth
  • Mask trim and edges with quality tape
  • Prime bare patches and stains

Cutting In

Cutting in is painting the edges that a roller can’t reach. Use a 2-3 inch angled brush and keep the line clean.

Pro tip: Dip the brush, tap off excess (don’t scrape), and paint in smooth, even strokes.

Rolling Technique

  • Use a quality roller cover (microfibre for smooth walls, nap for textured)
  • Roll in a W pattern, then fill in
  • Don’t press too hard — let the roller do the work
  • Keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks

Common Mistakes

  • Painting over wallpaper paste residue
  • Skipping primer
  • Using cheap brushes and rollers
  • Not letting each coat dry fully
  • Painting in direct sunlight (dries too fast, causes brush marks)

Colour Tips

  • Test colours in the actual room with large swatches
  • Look at the colour in natural and artificial light
  • Two coats is usually the minimum for full coverage
