Rattan furniture is popular because its woven texture makes an outdoor seating area feel softer and more relaxed than a plain metal arrangement. The term is used loosely, however. Natural rattan and synthetic resin weave have very different care needs, so check the construction before assuming a product is suitable for year-round exposure.
Natural rattan or synthetic weave?
Natural rattan is a plant material and is better suited to dry, sheltered conditions or indoor use. Synthetic weave is made to imitate the look while handling outdoor conditions more effectively. Even synthetic rattan furniture needs protection from standing water, frost and dirt.
Ask what the weave is made from, whether it is UV resistant and how the frame is protected. A description that only says rattan does not tell you enough.
Inspect the frame and the weave
The frame carries the load, so look for stable joints and feet that will not sink into soft ground. The weave should feel consistent, without sharp ends, loose strands or large variations in tension. Sit on the furniture if you can and check that the base does not flex excessively.

- Brush away leaves and grit before washing.
- Use the cleaning method recommended for the material and finish.
- Keep cushions dry and store them indoors during long wet spells.
- Use a breathable cover or sheltered storage rather than wrapping damp furniture tightly.
Is rattan right for your garden?
It suits patios, conservatories and sheltered terraces where texture is welcome and the furniture can be cleaned easily. It may be less suitable for an exposed lawn or a home with very limited storage. Consider aluminium or timber if you prefer a simpler frame or want furniture with a different visual weight.
Look beyond the woven finish. A well-made frame, sensible dimensions and realistic maintenance plan matter more than whether the set is described as premium rattan.
