Home accessories are the finishing layer that makes a room feel lived in, but more objects do not always make a home feel more personal. The best accessories relate to the room’s scale, colours and daily life. Start with what the room needs, then add a few pieces with texture, memory or useful function.

Work from the room’s existing palette

Pick one or two supporting colours from the sofa, rug, artwork or curtains. Repeat them in small amounts rather than buying every accessory in the same shade. Natural wood, woven fibres, ceramic and glass can add interest without introducing too many competing colours.

Layer by height and texture

On a shelf or console, combine a tall element, a medium object and a low horizontal piece. Leave breathing space around the arrangement. Books, trays and boxes can provide structure, while a plant or soft textile prevents the display from feeling rigid.

In a small room, choose fewer larger objects instead of many small ornaments. This reduces visual noise and makes cleaning easier.

Choose accessories that earn their place

• Use a lamp to improve the evening light, not only as decoration.
• Choose baskets for storage and texture together.
• Display artwork at a height that can be viewed comfortably.
• Keep sentimental objects where they can be seen rather than hiding them in a perfect scheme.

Edit the arrangement

Photograph the room from the doorway and remove anything that looks too similar or makes a surface difficult to use. Rotate seasonal pieces rather than filling every shelf. Keep fragile objects away from busy routes and do not block heating controls, vents or sockets.

Good home accessories support the room’s atmosphere and the way it works. A small, edited collection will usually look more considered than a crowded display of individually attractive items.
